Biofib'isolation, a bio-sourced insulation for the insulation of a building in Nantes

A new building with a highly designer architecture, made from a blend of wood and concrete, is under construction in Nantes. The goal for this modern building is to limit its carbon footprint and achieve good acoustic performance. It is for these two reasons in particular that the bio-sourced insulation Biofib'Ouate, manufactured by the Vendée company Cavac Biomatériaux, was chosen. These are 100 mm double-layer panels, which will insulate the wooden boxes of the building's frame. Made from hemp and cellulose wadding, they guarantee excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, lasting over time.

Currently under construction, BUILDING B, located in Nantes, between the creative district of the Île de Nantes and the former shipyard halls, is a mixture of a wooden frame with a concrete structure which provides "bracing" for the whole for a designer and contemporary architecture.

The building's frame was designed with prefabricated wooden boxes in the Le Duramen workshops in Vendée and ACB in Anjou. To insulate the wooden boxes, these construction companies chose the bio-sourced Biofib' insulation. This insulation, based on hemp and wadding, manufactured by Cavac Biomatériaux, is used for this project in 100 mm, double-layer panels. Recognized for its quality in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation, it displays a thermal resistance of 200 m5K/W in 2 mm.

Georges Delrieu, CEO of Le Duramen, explains the choice of Biofib' bio-sourced insulation: "For this project, we were looking to work with a local company for the lowest possible carbon cost. We quickly chose Cavac Biomatériaux, based in Vendée and renowned for its complete hemp supply chain, from field to construction site, which is unique in Europe. This leads to a very favorable carbon footprint for its Biofib' insulation range.

The design office's specifications imposed constraints on acoustic performance due to the building's city-center location. This is why we chose Biofib'Ouate, which, thanks to its cellulose wadding, is specially adapted for thermal and acoustic insulation. Hemp, which also makes up this insulation, offers very good mechanical resistance to the panels, which ensures the longevity of thermal performance, essential in a bioclimatic, low-energy building.

Biofib'ouate was therefore the only insulation that met all the constraints of this project.
