Cavac Biomaterials, the only player in the insulation market to participate in environmental labeling

Everyone's awareness of energy savings is real. Water, electricity, everyone is now striving to behave more "civic-mindedly." Housing is no exception to this trend. Proper insulation is now the first truly ecological act. Cavac Biomatériaux has understood this well by taking a proactive approach to displaying the environmental performance of its products.

Cavac Biomaterials: a completely ecological production cycle
Cavac Biomatériaux, with its Biofib'duo hemp and linen insulation, is the only player in the insulation market to have been selected by the Ministry of Sustainable Development for its "test" operation on environmental labeling. The goal of this campaign is to offer consumers the opportunity to choose products based on educational information: product content and packaging in carbon equivalent, natural resource consumption, impact on natural environments and global warming.


2 indicators guaranteeing the good environmental performance of Biofib'duo
As part of the national environmental labeling experiment, manufacturers are required to select at least two indicators, including one on global warming. Cavac Biomatériaux has selected the "air pollution" and "climate change" indicators, presented in the form of a color scale (from green to red) coupled with a rating system (A to D).

Air pollution
Biofib'duo insulation has a low air pollution index: 343 m3
This indicator, expressed in m3, corresponds to the volume of air required to dilute to an acceptable threshold all chemical pollutants emitted during the product's lifetime. The higher the indicator, the greater the impact on air pollution.

Climate change
The "climate change" indicator reveals that the production of 1 m2 of Biofib'duo insulation (hemp & flax) and its use throughout its lifetime generate 3.05 kg of CO2 equivalent. This insulation has a favorable carbon footprint and therefore a low impact on climate change. Indeed, hemp and flax capture carbon during their growth (and release O2), which makes it possible to offset a large part of the volumes of CO2 emitted during the production process.

Cavac Biomaterials relies on Biofib'duo's life cycle analysis (LCA) to identify areas for improvement
Biofib'duo insulation comes from a complete "eco-logical" supply chain, from field to construction site. As a result, the environmental impacts over the entire life cycle of Biofib'duo are low. The "climate change" indicator reveals that for 1 m2 of insulation manufactured, approximately 0,9 kg of CO2 equivalent are emitted. This positive result is partly linked to the fixation of CO2 during the cultivation phase: 4,4 kg of CO2 are stored in flax and hemp during their growth.

The LCA identified areas for improvement. Currently, the insulation is composed of 90% flax and hemp and 10% textile fiber (the binder). However, 40 to 70% of Biofib'duo's environmental impact is related to this 10% textile fiber. Two avenues are currently being explored: reducing this proportion or using a fiber of natural origin.
