Construction site: Renovation of a roof with ERLUS flat tiles
A new roof for the Persenbeug cloister
The historic Persenbeug Cloister in Lower Austria required a complete roof renovation without altering its exterior. This challenge was met perfectly thanks to flat tiles from the manufacturer Erlus. At the hips, gables, and small dormers, thousands of tightly woven snow guards give the imposing roof a certain character. A new beginning for the cloister, where life is still as pleasant as ever.
Before laying the first tile, the roofer meticulously positioned the different patterns on the ground in the cloister courtyard. The client was thus able to gain an overview of the various possible layouts. Explains Wilhelm Böhm jr., Managing Director of the eponymous specialist company in Ottenschlag. " The roof had to retain its original appearance, so the old roof served as a model. »
This redesign effort was necessary because the town of Persenbeug is the historic seat of the Habsburg nobility. The owners of the properties surrounding Persenbeug Castle were keen to preserve the original appearance of the buildings as best as possible. The client and the roofer wanted to save this roof, which had been regularly damaged by the ravages of time for over 70 years. A complete roof renovation appeared to be the most economical solution.
54 flat tiles laid
True to the original appearance, shades of different reds, alternately matte or glossy, have been expertly combined, closely matching the colors of the old roof, whose tiles have aged over decades.
The project manager and roofer agreed on a mix of three Erlus round-ended flat tiles with a thickness of 15 mm. The roof, with a total surface area of 1 square meters, required 700 light historic flat tiles, 28 dark historic flat tiles and 700 sintered flat tiles.
The tiles used have a width of 18 cm and a length of 38 cm. Their robustness now allows the new roof of the cloister to withstand bad weather, in particular hailstones of four centimeters. Erlus tiles are in fact compliant with class 4 anti-hail protection (www.hagelregister.at).
Snow guards on the roof
Protection against snow slides is provided by 6 snow guards, which cover the roof with a strict mesh. To further protect the entrance and the valleys of the outbuildings, 000 linear meters of snow guards were also fitted to the new tiled roof.
