Cybel Extension - House extension

Three months of work on site were enough to give birth to Mr and Mrs L.'s new life project in Limoges.

Contemporary wood and aluminum extension with terrace on stilts, on a traditional Limoges house

Initially, the couple wanted to expand the living area to create both a lounge and a dining room. This represents a new step in the evolution of their home, as they had already renovated this traditional farmhouse.

The owners first contacted a local carpenter, who, seeing that there were no plans for the extension, referred them to Florian Boissard, head of the Cybel Extension agency in Limoges. As a general contractor, he can work on the entire project, from the design of the plans with the Cybel Extension design office (or the Archibel architectural firm) to the completion of the work.

The house is located in Limoges, outside the center, in an "airy and green" neighborhood which allows for expansion.

The Cybel Extension agency designed a 17 m² project that builds on an existing terrace, built during the initial renovation of the house by a project manager, and whose foundations were sound. The construction principle of the timber frame was quickly chosen, to adapt to the technical constraints, and also for the aesthetics brought to the whole: a contemporary structure with vertical wood cladding and anthracite aluminum angles that recall the roof band.

A renovation that fits perfectly with the existing structure

"We created insulated wooden overbottoms to address the sealing constraints at the base of the wall," explains Florian Boissard. And he added: "To compensate for the difference in height between the finished floor and the terrace, we created a lean screed and sprayed polyurethane foam insulation which allowed us to compensate for the terrace slope of (3%)."

An innovative construction system for a terrace on stilts

The extension extends into a 32 m2 wooden terrace which offers a second living/dining room and allows you to make the most of the outdoors.

The terrace on stilts is built using an innovative foundation system: foundation screws (Krinner) allow the creation of non-invasive anchor points, using a dry system, with an optimized execution time.

This foundation solution can be used for the construction of timber-framed extensions, following a soil study and sizing adapted to the project.

An efficient construction site: short deadlines and maximum insulation

The construction is a wooden frame pre-assembled in the workshop, assembled on site. The time savings are mainly due to pre-fabrication in the workshop. The advantage of timber construction is that it is a dry process (no drying time is required on site).

In terms of insulation, the entire structure benefits from high-performance materials. The roof frame is insulated with cellulose wadding and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam under the waterproofing support (EPDM). The walls are insulated with wood wool.

Materials chosen to respect the environment

Construction Sector : wooden frame

Isolation : cellulose wadding for the roof, PIR insulation under EPDM, wood wool for the walls and interior lining

Vertical wood cladding : autoclaved spruce

Wooden terrace : autoclaved pine

Roof band and wall corners : aluminum dibond 7016

Railings : 7016 aluminum

A useful and aesthetic “cap”

With the desire to dress the house even better, it was decided to create a return on the width which ends with a secondary entrance with door, cap and integrated lighting.

The French aspire to more space in their living spaces. This is now a certainty: Confinement has raised awareness of the desire to live larger, to be able to live outdoors by creating a real living space and to promote well-being while helping to preserve the environment (Ifop study - December 2020).

81% of French people want a committed approach from real estate players in favor of the environment.

9/10 French people are aware of the impact of housing on health and well-being.

86% of French people want to have an outdoor space in their accommodation.

No. 1: Wood is the most popular construction material by the French on environmental and well-being dimensions.
