Better maintained boilers with Véolia

To comply with new boiler maintenance regulations, Véolia has equipped all of its heating technicians with combustion measurement equipment. The data obtained, particularly regarding carbon monoxide, makes it easier to ensure the boiler is operating properly.

Veolia Habitat Services meets new standards for boiler maintenance

Boiler maintenance is more than ever a hot topic: the publication of a new decree at the end of 2009 has just strengthened regulations regarding domestic safety; in particular, it makes it mandatory to measure the level of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere, a gas responsible for many cases of poisoning that are too often fatal*. Professionals in charge of maintenance must also inform consumers about the proper use of heating systems, a role of information and advice to better control energy consumption and reduce polluting emissions.

At Veolia Habitat Services, the new commercial brand dedicated to the world of homes and habitats from Veolia Environnement, the global leader in environmental services, heating appliance maintenance contracts now meet the requirements of these new standards. The rapid and efficient implementation of the new control points is facilitated by the brand's strong commitment to safety, environmental protection, and energy savings.

* Carbon monoxide, the leading cause of death by poisoning in France, claims thousands of victims each year, most often due to heating malfunctions in winter. Each year, there are approximately 6 victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, including 000 hospitalizations and more than a hundred deaths.

A combustion measuring device to meet new boiler maintenance standards

Veolia Habitat Services now equips all of its 600 heating technicians with a combustion measuring device that allows simple and effective monitoring of data inherent to the proper functioning of the boiler:

• measurement of ambient carbon monoxide levels

• measurement of the various pollutants released into the atmosphere

• measurement of the draft in the connection duct

• measurement of gas pressure and flow

At the end of the intervention, the device produces a summary of the various data collected, which will be explained and given to the customers, accompanied by the new intervention certificate.

Adapted technical training

Constantly trained in new technologies in heating and hot water production, the Veolia Habitat Services teams are able to provide information and recommendations on existing installations as well as personalized advice to improve the comfort of its customers.

What the new regulations say (decree of 15/09/2009 - Official Journal of 31/10/2009)

It specifies the terms of annual maintenance of boilers made compulsory by the decree of June 9, 2009 (no. 2009-649 - JO of June 11, 06)

• The obligation, during the annual maintenance visit, to measure the pollutant emissions of the boiler including the carbon monoxide level in the ambient air. (article 1). In the event of an abnormally high level, the professional must inform the user and shut down the boiler until it is put back into service under normal operating conditions (article 3). The technician responsible for maintenance must also check the boiler's efficiency.

• The provision of necessary advice on the proper use of the existing boiler, possible improvements to the entire heating system and the possible benefit of replacing it, for greater energy savings and less pollution.

• Sending, within 15 days following the visit, a maintenance certificate including the results of the boiler performance assessment, the pollutant emission rate and advice on improving the installations. (article 2).
