Fabemi, a player committed to industrial ecology and territories

In accordance with the 2020 Environmental Regulation (ER) guidelines on reducing CO2 emissions in buildings, the Fabemi Group has stepped up the decarbonization of its production. The approach involves combining the manufacture of low-carbon concrete blocks, the circular economy, and the Group's industrial expertise. Fabtherm® insulating concrete blocks are a prime example of the company's commitment to Made in France industrial ecology and the development of customer-oriented product innovations capable of meeting the challenges of today and, above all, tomorrow.

The Fabemi Group is intensifying the decarbonization of its production

From manufacturing to end-of-life recycling, Fabemi concrete blocks have a very low carbon footprint thanks to a local production-distribution policy, strong sourcing choices close to factories, and a manufacturing process without firing with natural drying. The transportation of Fabemi products over an average zone of 200 km around the production sites contributes to controlling the Group's environmental impact. Nationally, Fabemi's strategic locations make it possible to reduce or even eliminate deliveries/storage/re-deliveries and to optimize product transportation as much as possible, which is mainly carried out by road.

A very low carbon impact by nature

The Fabemi Group, a family business created in 1961 in Donzère (Drôme), offers a global range of prefabricated concrete products for the following areas: Structural Work, Roads & Networks, Terrace & Garden. With 60 years of experience, Fabemi has been able to adapt to offer high-performance prefabricated products that always comply with the latest regulations. Fabtherm® insulating blocks, for example, help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings by around 4 to 8% compared to other benchmark construction solutions on the market, thus allowing the construction of works that comply with criterion C of RE2020 and its future thresholds of 2025 and 2028.

In addition, the geometries of Fabemi concrete blocks are optimized to facilitate their implementation, while reducing the use of raw materials (alternating partition/hollow). The insulating capacities can be reinforced by an insulating mineral foam core. This is the case of Fabtherm® Air Fabemi insulating blocks, equipped with 100% mineral foam which gives them exceptional thermal resistance (two to eight times more insulating than traditional blocks). This natural solution allows you to build while insulating, without impacting the carbon weight of the facade, which saves time on the construction site and provides a gain in living space.

Fabemi concrete blocks have Environmental and Health Declarations Sheets (FDES). Data verified and available on INIES which makes it possible to calculate the contribution of the products, developed and manufactured by the Fabemi Group, to the environmental impact of the structure to be built.

Entirely recyclable, Fabemi concrete blocks do not need to be sorted after deconstruction, as rubble waste does not require any special handling. After the buildings are demolished, they become infinitely recyclable and reusable in new products, replacing part of the aggregates.

Development rooted in the territory

At a time when industrial relocations are highly popular, Fabemi stands out as a pillar of the Made in France brand. The company has always developed 100% French expertise and production, closely aligned with the needs of construction professionals, as well as a genuine corporate culture, a symbol of Fabemi's identity.

The products of the Structural Works, Roads & Networks and Terrace & Garden activities all come from the 13 factories of the Fabemi Group - several of which are certified "Origine France Garantie". The geographical distribution of the production units not only allows for close proximity to customers but also limits the transport of materials always manufactured as close as possible to the construction sites, which reduces fuel consumption, and consequently CO2 emissions.

A true local partner across all of its activities, the Group provides its clients with tailor-made and innovative services. It relies on more than 430 committed employees who boost local activity and cultivate good relationships with all professionals involved in the construction process, which allows for continuous input into the Group's innovation and development department. Clients are contacted by teams trained in products and solutions, attentive to their needs and committed to being responsive. For example, the internal engineering department and the design office can optimize projects and propose the implementation of the most efficient solutions possible based on the regulatory context.

Investment at the heart of development policy

To strengthen its position in the precast concrete products market, Fabemi is pursuing a dynamic development and investment strategy.

Since September 2021, the Valence Agglos site has expanded to accommodate new tools: an in-line grinding machine and two palletizing robots. This investment, amounting to €1,9 million, will free up another of the Group's facilities and increase production capacity.

In addition, to meet a specific market demand, Fabemi has invested more than 1,2 million euros at its Montargis site in a new bench for the production of cast beams, which should be marketed in the first quarter of 2022.

By coexisting with hybrid beams, developed and manufactured exclusively by Fabemi, the molded beams will allow the Group to expand its offering and position it in very specific markets (crawl spaces only) where the technical arguments and advantages of the current hybrid beam are not always decisive in the choice of the overall construction system.

Recycling and upgrading of concrete

Beyond short-circuit production and construction, favored due to the impact of transport costs, the recycling of concrete and construction-related waste has become a major issue for manufacturers. Fabemi's manufacturing waste, even in small quantities, represents a potential source of recycled aggregates that the company plans to reuse by reintegrating them directly into the manufacturing of its products. The Group also encourages the reclamation of concrete from deconstruction.

Thus, Fabemi is organizing itself, with the support of the Concrete Industry Federation (FIB), to meet its obligations related to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The EPR system implies that economic actors (manufacturers, distributors, importers) are responsible for the entire life cycle of the products they place on the market, from their eco-design to their end of life.

The REP channels make it possible to organize the prevention and management of waste for certain types of products. The objective is not only to treat the waste produced, but also to prevent it by acting on the entire life cycle of the products.
