Finnforest strengthens its ThermoWood-D heat-treated wood cladding offering

At BATIMAT 2011, Finnforest France, Home & Living business, announced several innovations in its ThermoWood-D heat-treated wood cladding range: the expansion of its offering with the development of new slat profiles.

Finnforest ThermoWood-D heat-treated wood cladding

Thanks to the ThermoWood-D(*) process, Finnforest's wooden slats for exterior applications display high qualities of dimensional stability and durability: a real guarantee of obtaining consistent and long-lasting cladding!

A proven and environmentally friendly process
Northern red pine and northern white fir are heated to 212°C in a steam-saturated atmosphere to remove resin and excess moisture. No chemicals are added during the heat treatment, and the released fumes are collected and treated.


The qualities of Finnforest ThermoWood-D allow its outdoor use in conditions corresponding to Class 3 (according to NF EN 335-2). Finnforest only uses PEFC-certified wood.

"Elegance" range: false openwork profile in three widths

Openwork cladding offers an unparalleled aesthetic, but often requires careful installation. To combine design and ease of installation, Finnforest offers a new faux openwork profile called "Elegance," whose solid slats are installed like traditional cladding.

Thanks to the specific cutting of the blade, the openwork effect is perfectly reproduced for a highly decorative visual effect. In addition, thanks to the blade interlocking system, the blades are perfectly parallel and even across the entire surface.


Available in two widths of 92 and 118 mm (for a thickness of 26 mm and lengths of 4,2 m and 4,5 m), Finnforest plans to launch a third, wider 2012 mm board (thickness of 142 mm and lengths of 26 m and 4,2 m) in 4,5.

Large width moutier profile in white Northern Fir
In 2012, Finnforest will also launch a new wide moutier profile to enrich its ThermoWood-D range. With a width of 192 mm Actual (182 mm Useful) for a thickness of 21 mm and lengths of 4,2 m and 4,8 m, this board will be one of the widest on the market. Unlike the other references in the ThermoWood-D range, it will be made from Northern White Fir (spruce).

 Technical advice, fire classification and carbon footprint

• Renewal of the Technical Opinion
Finnforest ThermoWood-D wood cladding is the first and only one to receive a technical approval in France (No. 2/10-1417). Since June 14, 2011, this technical approval has been renewed by the CSTB for a period of 4 years. Beyond official recognition, this technical approval guarantees the strict quality control of the ThermoWood-D process applied by Finnforest. Furthermore, it facilitates its acceptance by inspection agencies and provides a 10-year manufacturer's warranty.

Obtaining two Euroclass Fire Classifications
Finnforest's ThermoWood-D cladding has just obtained its Euroclass D-s2, d0 fire classification (according to NF EN 13501-1).
This classification, confirmed in the technical opinion, corresponds to category M3 “Moderately Flammable” of the French classification M (reaction to fire of materials).

This fire reaction criterion is increasingly important, particularly for architects and other specifiers who create ERP (Public Access Buildings).

Excellent carbon footprint of the material
Finnforest's ThermoWood-D cladding has a low carbon footprint with total emissions estimated at 104 kg CO2/m3.
This result is the sum of CO2 emissions measured during the different phases of the wood production, transformation and transport process:
Felling and transporting wood from the forest to the factory: 5 kg CO2/m3
Energy requirements in electricity: 0 kg CO2/m3
(cogeneration energy in a modern factory)
Sawing of raw material: 1 kg CO2/m3
Transport of sawn timber to the kiln: 5 kg CO2/m3
ThermoWood process (oven): 41 kg CO2/m3
Truck transport of ThermoWood to Honfleur: 52 kg CO2/m3
TOTAL: 104 kg CO2/m3

Furthermore, Finnforest's ThermoWood-D cladding is a material that naturally stores CO2. Its carbon footprint is therefore extremely positive, as the finished Thermowood D cladding product stores 825 kg of CO2 per m3.

Finnforest's timber comes from sustainably managed forests. 97% of Finnforest's forests are PEFC certified, compared to only 7% of forests worldwide.
