FOAMGLAS takes to the heights of the WATT Tower
The WATT Tower, owned by ICF Habitat Novedis, is undergoing a restructuring and a 4-story extension designed and carried out by the A&B Architectes Group, Vincent Lavergne Architecture and Urban Planning and Eiffage Construction, the Group's agent.
FOAMGLAS® TAPERED insulates the roofs of the WATT Tower (Paris 13th), the tallest wooden extension in Europe
The 17-story tower will offer 174 new studios, services and shops on the ground floor, a gym and a terrace with panoramic views.
"The upper floors are raised in wood and develop like a succession of cascading terraces, a play of planted steps. In addition to the lightness of the wooden structure, its relatively simple implementation makes sense in the search for low-carbon constructions that are more respectful of the environment," explains Vincent Lavergne.
« We discovered this new CLT wood roofing technology during this project. Working on a zero-slope wooden load-bearing element is surprising, and very practical! Since the insulation is rigid and does not settle, the slope it creates is durable. This type of service undoubtedly enhances our waterproofing profession. ", comments Kamil Karaoglu, CEO of TEKA Waterproofing.
Simplified implementation
The WATT Tower's roof terraces are insulated with FOAMGLAS® TAPERED T3+ cellular glass on a CLT wood load-bearing element. The FOAMGLAS® TAPERED (sloped) process on KLH® CLT panels made it possible to create a zero-slope CLT wood load-bearing element.
This process simplifies timber framing and facilitates its installation. Indoors, it provides a horizontal timber ceiling. Outdoors, FOAMGLAS® TAPERED sloping thermal insulation (with a slope of 1,6% or 3% depending on the roof's intended use) is installed before receiving the waterproofing and the chosen finish.
Before this technological innovation, wooden roofs were necessarily designed with a slope in line with the load-bearing element. Thanks to the compressive strength without settling of FOAMGLAS® TAPERED, it is now possible to design, in wooden construction, a high slab with zero slope, sloping insulation, then traditional waterproofing.
FOAMGLAS® T3+ is the best non-combustible insulation for flat roofs, with a thermal conductivity of 0,036 W/mK guaranteed for 25 years. Eco-friendly, made from 66% recycled glass, effective throughout the life of the building (because it is airtight and moisture-proof, and because the insulation boards are bonded together), reusable in crushed form, it also meets the requirements of a circular and low-carbon economy.
