The company LCA - Les Charpentiers de l'Atlantique - was commissioned to build the new Medical Reception Center (FAM) in Challans in Vendée, which will accommodate 28 residents during 2012.

Built with a timber frame, this home consists of four buildings arranged around a central courtyard. AD'HOC Architecture's expertise and technical expertise in structural timber construction were key factors in LCA's choice for this major project.

AN INNOVATIVE CONCEPT: prefabrication of wooden modules in the workshop

LCA is one of the few French companies with expertise in the workshop prefabrication of wooden modules. This innovative concept was used for the construction of the Challans Medical Reception Center in the form of roof boxes.

These boxes, prefabricated, assembled and insulated at LCA in the workshop, are composed of a CTBH slab (which resists humidity), insulation, a vapor barrier and Inopanne I-beams from France Poutres used for the framework.

According to Olivier Chapeau, Sales and Development Director at France Poutres, I-beams offer many advantages for these prefabricated boxes: "Our I-beams are lightweight, dimensionally stable, they can achieve longer spans than solid wood and they provide all the regulatory guarantees, based on European Technical Approval and CE marking."

This innovative concept offers numerous advantages for the architect: time savings in project implementation, rapid watertightness, the ability to continue working even in adverse weather conditions and process reliability (thermal bridge and sound insulation).

The speed of manufacturing and assembly also represents, in the construction of a medical home like that of Challans, undeniable advantages for the client, in this case a community for which one of the main concerns on this type of project is respecting deadlines.
