THE P-LASER IS THE FIRST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND FULLY RECYCLABLE HVDC CABLE SYSTEM

Prysmian Group, a global leader in the energy and telecommunications cables and systems industry, is set to launch a revolutionary new cable technology for the development of power transmission networks, ensuring superior electrical performance, lower costs, and greater environmental sustainability. The Group today announced the successful development and testing of its new P-Laser 600 kV cable system for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) applications.

“This major innovation contributes to the progress of the entire HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) cable industry, thanks to its 3,5 GW per dipole, the highest electrical power ever achieved; it generates cost reductions of up to 30% per MW transmitted,” said Massimo Battaini, Senior Vice President of Energy Projects at Prysmian Group. “The validation of the 600 kV test phase is further proof of the quality and robustness of the P-Laser isolation technology,” he added.

“P-Laser” is the name of the most advanced and innovative technology using an in-house developed thermoplastic material—known as HPTE (High Performance Thermoplastic Elastomer)—that allows cables to be produced more efficiently with a lower environmental impact than traditional XLPE, thanks to their manufacture in a single, continuous process. A key feature of this new insulation technology is that no chemical reactions are required during manufacturing to achieve the material properties required for the long-term electrical integrity of HVDC insulation systems. This results in shorter production times, with positive results in both lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. P-Laser technology is fully compatible with existing cable and accessory technologies and offers improved electrical performance and greater reliability compared to traditional XLPE-insulated cables.

The application of P-Laser to HVDC underground and submarine systems marks a decisive turning point in the cable industry. This major advancement follows the Group's announcement in May of this year regarding the validation of the test of an extruded XLPE cable solution, at the same voltage level (600 kV DC), and represents the third insulation technology proposed by Prysmian in the field of UHVDC (very high voltage direct current) systems in less than a year. These achievements once again confirm Prysmian's commitment to continuous innovation and the Group's leading technological position.
