Lignotrend real wood panels offer strong acoustic and decorative potential

In indoor swimming pools, reverberation caused by hard materials requires acoustic compensation

The Ligno Acoustique Light wood panels used for the renovation of the indoor pool in Waldshut-Tiengen (Baden-Württemberg) provide an attractive decorative dynamic and excellent silence. This solution is also an excellent choice for indoor pools thanks to its high resistance to moisture and flames.

The municipal hall and the indoor swimming pool under the same roof

During the complete renovation of the 1970s building complex, the challenge was to adapt the multi-purpose hall, the indoor swimming pool and the sauna to current requirements in terms of fire safety and accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The architects of S4 Architects(Waldshut) worked on a project with controlled costs, but also with an eye to the future.

After nearly three years of construction, the building reopened in the fall of 2018 with a floor space of 3 m². The city's most famous cultural center can now accommodate approximately 600 visitors. A reception hall and a swimming pool extension were added to the existing reinforced concrete building. The old sauna was replaced with a new, larger facility.

Wood to compensate for reverberation from hard surfaces

Glass, concrete, tiles, steel, water: reverberation from hard surfaces is an acoustic nightmare in indoor pools. Proper compensation is essential to effectively reduce noise levels. The architects brilliantly solved the problem with Ligno Acoustique Light cladding. With their light white fir wood surface, these finely profiled panels absorb sound. Arranged in waves between the concrete ceiling beams, they also make a distinctive design statement, echoing the water surface. Openings for the ventilation system appear as discreet slots between the panels and beams.

The ambient humidity of the pool does not harm the wood

Even in the typical climate of an indoor pool, the internal humidity of the wood remains low and poses no problems. Outside of areas exposed to splash water, the wooden elements can be used very well, because the ambient climate, and therefore the humidity of the wood, are controlled by the humidity-controlled ventilation. At a temperature of 30°C and a maximum relative humidity of 75%, the internal humidity of the wood never exceeds 14%: an environment that is far too dry for the development of harmful organisms.
