Lignotrend: Optimal acoustics for the Cham municipal hall

A municipal hall is a place for festivities, meetings, and communication. Therefore, interior acoustics are a fundamental aspect from the very beginning. The noise level must not become unpleasant when several people gather. The municipal hall in Cham, Bavaria (Germany), is designed with contemporary materials such as concrete, natural stone, and glass. It was therefore important to attenuate these sound-reflecting surfaces. For this reason, the designers clad the ceilings and walls of particularly busy rooms such as the large foyer, the restaurant, and the meeting rooms with Ligno® Acoustique light acoustic panels from Lignotrend. The refined knot-free silver fir wood of the elements guarantees optimal sound and a timeless, modern architecture.

Real wood provides a unique ambiance

A new cultural venue in Cham

This modern municipal hall replaces the old village hall in Cham, which no longer met user needs. A new three-volume building has emerged on the outskirts of the town, designed by the Stuttgart-based architectural firm Lamott.Lamott. It extends over the sloping terrain. The generously glazed base opens onto a raised entrance area. The angled rear accommodates the catering service, storage areas, the art space, and the administration. The access areas, the foyer, and the restaurant are oriented transparently toward the square. Two further volumes rise above this base. They house the large village hall and meeting rooms. With its facade made of anodized aluminum profiles, the building appears to float above the base. The municipal hall received the BDA Niederbayern Oberpfalz 2021 "regiNO" regional award for its architectural quality. In its assessment, the jury praised the harmony between the exterior envelope and the interior design.

The white fir brings a refined visual and acoustic touch to the interior

Inside the building, the white fir brings a special elegance. The designers used Ligno acoustic slatted panels.® Light acoustics for covering ceilings and walls, especially in high-traffic areas such as the foyer, restaurant, meeting rooms, and the large hall of approximately 680 m². With their regular profiling, the panels create a peaceful visual surface and a particularly aesthetic interior design. Ligno panels® Acoustique Light are made from locally grown wood. Their integrated sound absorbers are made from natural wood fibers. Even the adhesives used meet the stringent requirements of eco-construction.

Real wood surfaces that are flame-retardant

Reception venues like the Cham Municipal Hall must meet fire safety standards. The panels have a modified internal structure to resist flames. The grooved surfaces made of real wood are treated with a fire-resistant impregnation that is safe for health and does not alter the natural tone of the wood. The low-flammability property is therefore virtually invisible.

The manufacturer also offers other treatments for its refined wood surfaces. For example, the texture can be enhanced with a translucent or opaque lacquer to add a touch of color.
