Pommay, Eternit fiber-cement slate: the secret to a successful renovation!

The Genouillac social housing renovation project includes the repair of 1575m² of roofing. 

For the roofing work, the project owner and the roofer, in agreement with the town hall of Genouillac, opted for an economical solution in harmony with the traditional appearance of the houses in the town: Eternit's Pommay fiber-cement slate.

> A project with technical and aesthetic constraints

The Jules Lacote social housing site is twenty-five years old, and carpentry and facade work is planned. Priority, however, is given to replacing the roof, which poses a risk of recurring leaks in the housing. 

The renovation work presents several constraints:

- 

the renovation must take place without uncovering the accommodation, since they all remain inhabited during the work

- 

the truss frame is not designed to support heavy roofs

- 

the subdivision must respect a certain harmony of appearance, being located in the center of a village with old houses covered with flat tiles

The challenge thus became threefold: renovate without uncovering, control the weight constraint, and integrate into the regional architecture based on flat tiles.

Thanks to the simplicity and speed of installation of Eternit's Pommay slates , the construction schedule was met. The existing structure was retained, and 20mm counter-battens were installed directly above each truss, resulting in a spacing of 0,60m.

The roof slope is 45°. The battens, spaced 14,5 cm apart, are nailed to the counter-battens. The 40 x 24 Pommay slates from Eternit are fixed using stainless steel hooks; 26 elements are thus required to cover one square meter.

As social housing is integrated into the heart of the town, Pommay fiber cement slates from Eternit were the right compromise between the price supplied and installed and the traditional appearance.

Pierre Bignet, head of the roofing company for the project, answers the question of the choice of Eternit's Pommay fiber-cement slates : " We immediately saw the advantage of the system. With this product, we also had the possibility of addressing both the weight constraint and the aesthetic one ."

This slate, with its flamed and nuanced hues, blends perfectly into tiled landscapes. In addition, its flared edges give it a real relief, particularly remarkable on roofs at eye level, as is the case in the Jules Lacote housing estate.

Pommay slate is easy and quick to install. Its calibrated and consistent thickness eliminates on-site sorting and generates less waste and loss (100 slates purchased = 100 installed).

Fiber cement is a durable and eco-friendly material that resists frost and insect infestation. Waterproof and therefore rot-proof, fiber cement is nonetheless permeable to water vapor: it allows the roof to breathe, thus preventing condensation problems. It also offers high-level thermal and acoustic insulation. Non-combustible, it has a M0 fire rating.
