Purify your indoor air with Fermacell's Greenline solution

Contrary to popular belief, the air we breathe inside offices or homes is not necessarily pure and healthy. To address this issue, Fermacell has developed its Greenline range: its panels are coated with an active substance that absorbs harmful particles from the air, thus contributing to its purification.

FERMACELL greenline, the first comprehensive interior design solution for purifying ambient air

FERMACELL, a specialist in dry construction, has been manufacturing ranges of gypsum boards and 20% natural cellulose fibers for the French market for almost 100 years, intended for interior design.

Today, FERMACELL, keen to meet current consumer environmental demands, is improving the performance of its products.

Indeed, FERMACELL greenline is a complete solution combining panels and installation accessories (glue) for the creation of partitions, linings, ceilings and floors meeting the expectations of people who care about their health.

The FERMACELL greenline board is coated on both sides with a keratin-based active substance that acts as an indoor air purifier in buildings.

Analyzed and certified by the independent Eco-Institut in Cologne, the effects of FERMACELL greenline demonstrate its ability to absorb harmful substances and emissions from indoor air, even with a finishing coating, preferably paint or wall covering open to diffusion.

Furthermore, the FERMACELL greenline range of boards retains all the advantages of standard FERMACELL boards: high impact resistance, strong adhesion capacity, high fire protection (CF of 30 to 120 minutes depending on the installation), high degree of sound insulation and application in damp rooms for private use (kitchen, bathroom, etc.).

Thanks to FERMACELL greenline panels, FERMACELL offers a solution that is particularly suitable for all requirements in terms of eco-compatibility and sustainability, in residential but also in ERP* (hospital and school environments, retirement homes, hotels, etc.), whether in renovation or new construction.

Indoor air quality: a growing concern

We spend an average of 22 hours a day in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces (homes, workplaces, schools, leisure areas, shops, transport, etc.). However, the air we breathe can have effects on comfort and health: simple discomfort, drowsiness, eye and skin irritation, and even respiratory allergies. Indoor air pollutants come not only from building materials but also from mundane daily activities, such as buying new furniture, installing new floor coverings, applying paint, or using cleaning products. Air quality is therefore becoming a public health issue.

By developing new products aimed at reducing these harmful effects from pollutant emissions in buildings, FERMACELL is taking an eco-responsible approach and contributing to a better quality of life.

FERMACELL greenline: the principle of air purification

The surface of FERMACELL greenline boards is factory-treated with a keratin-based coating. FERMACELL greenline works on an ecological principle, specifically on the natural cleaning properties of sheep's wool (a chemical reaction through molecular bonding).

Through a natural and sustainable process, emissions and harmful substances are thus captured and neutralized.

FERMACELL greenline is thus able to render most volatile organic compounds in the ambient air ineffective. Furthermore, its effectiveness has been proven even after the application of paint or coating open to diffusion. FERMACELL greenline not only improves indoor air, but its active ingredient has a long-term effect, depending on the quantity of harmful substances emitted, the volume of the room, the quantity of FERMACELL greenline boards used and the type of coating applied to the boards. Furthermore, the larger the surface area of the room, the more effective its effect will be.

With FERMACELL greenline, occupants will be able to enjoy a better quality of life whether in their homes, offices, public spaces or even at school.

FERMACELL greenline: convincing results in laboratory tests

To assess the effectiveness of FERMACELL greenline, the German manufacturer commissioned the Eco-Institut in Cologne.

This independent laboratory, created in 1988, aims to identify materials that contribute to a healthy home or preserve the environment. Here, the Eco-Institut focused on studying the adsorption of formaldehydes, organic compounds from the aldehyde family, and other carbonyl compounds contained in the air by FERMACELL greenline boards and the subsequent desorption. Conducted in two waves (December 2008 and March 2009) in a test chamber, the tests consisted of exposing the boards to a cocktail of harmful substances (methanal, ethanal, butanal, pentanal, etc.) at intervals of 1, 4, 24 and 48 hours. Their objective was to provide proof of the long-term fixation of formaldehydes and other aldehydes or ketones on FERMACELL greenline boards, in comparison with a standard Fermacell board.

Measurable reduction of harmful substances through the use of FERMACELL greenline

The table above shows, for example, that FERMACELL greenline boards are capable of neutralizing almost all formaldehyde present in the air. In fact, only 1% of these substances remain present in the ambient air.

The analysis of the concentration over the entire period during the re-emission process highlights an advantage of the FERMACELL greenline board. Indeed, both series of tests show that FERMACELL greenline makes it possible to absorb formaldehyde and other aldehydes or ketones through adsorption and significantly limits their re-emission (desorption) into the air. Finally, to complement this new range of boards, FERMACELL has also developed an environmentally friendly adhesive. This joint adhesive has also been tested and approved by the Eco-Institut in Cologne, Germany.

For 22 years, the Eco-Institut has been providing manufacturers, companies, importers and exporters worldwide with methods of tests carried out in laboratory. The Eco Institute's laboratories are responsible for examining and testing products in order to guarantee their quality requirements within the framework of the compliance with standards and laws in Europe and in the world. It thus ensures the product quality and user safety.
