Summary for decision-makers

Mondelēz International, a global food giant, owns the only factory in Jussy that produces LU's Napolitain biscuit. Following a fire that damaged two-thirds of the site, an ambitious reconstruction plan has been implemented to increase the competitiveness and flexibility of the factory, which is positioned as a leading industrial site in France.

The renovation incorporated FOAMGLAS® TAPERED cellular glass insulation with an integrated slope, allowing for water drainage without modifying the load-bearing structures. Completed on an occupied site over 12 months, the project relied on insulation solutions offering durability, fire resistance, and stable thermal performance, while ensuring continued production.

Mondelēz's production site in Jussy, Aisne, was severely damaged by fire in 2020. For the renovation of the steel deck roof, it was necessary to choose thermal insulation that created a minimum slope of 3% to ensure rainwater drainage. FOAMGLAS® TAPERED cellular glass insulation was recommended for its ability to achieve this slope. The factory was inaugurated in May 2025.

FOAMGLAS TAPERED insulation covers Mondelēz Group's LU plant

Established in many countries, Mondelēz International is an American multinational food company, particularly present in the biscuit and chocolate sectors, with iconic brands such as LU, Milka, Belin, etc. The Jussy factory, the historic production site of LU's Napolitain sponge cakes, is the only one in the world to produce this cake.

A technical constraint resolved

In the weeks following the tragedy, the Mondelēz group announced its intention to quickly restart operations. An ambitious reconstruction program aimed to make the Jussy plant more competitive and flexible, making it the American manufacturer's benchmark site in France.

The fire damaged two-thirds of the factory, but spared the structure. The steel deck roof had to incorporate a minimum slope of 3% to allow rainwater to drain away. The design office recommended FOAMGLAS® TAPERED cellular glass insulation with an integrated slope for the project. Thanks to this material, it was not necessary to reinforce or change the load-bearing structures to create a slope.

A quick construction site in the active factory

The construction site lasted 12 months on an occupied site. During the work, the production lines continued to operate thanks to the installation of scaffolding unique in Europe (the equivalent of two football pitches).

FOAMGLAS®'s expert teams worked closely with the design office to ensure optimal design and high-quality execution. They provided technical drawings and a detailed layout plan to implement the high-quality, future-proof FOAMGLAS® TAPERED integrated sloped insulation solution.

FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation boards offer an exceptional combination of properties: thermal performance that does not deteriorate over time, mass vapor barrier, water vapor, water and air tightness, not forgetting fire resistance.

FOAMGLAS® TAPERED Integrated slope insulation system

The easiest way to ensure proper water drainage is to add the slope directly into the insulation rather than into the building structure. A high-performance, durable insulation solution, FOAMGLAS® TAPERED guarantees perfect water drainage and saves considerable time on site, while complying with current slope regulations. Its high compressive strength also prevents any deformation.

Frequently Asked Questions for Decision Makers

What benefits did the Jussy plant derive from the use of FOAMGLAS® TAPERED?

FOAMGLAS® TAPERED made it possible to integrate the necessary slope into the roof without modifying the load-bearing structure, while ensuring high-performance, durable and fire-resistant insulation.

How was production maintained during the reconstruction work?

Production continued thanks to a unique scaffold covering the factory, allowing the work to be completed in 12 months without stopping the lines.

Why is FOAMGLAS® TAPERED recommended for industrial roof insulation?

The FOAMGLAS® TAPERED system guarantees efficient water drainage, high compressive strength, total sealing and stable thermal performance over time.
