Salmson, champion in South Africa

For the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, stadiums hosting matches were renovated and others were built. To meet the water needs of two buildings, Salmson designed an identical pumping system operating around two main pumps, or even three.

With over a century of expertise and experience in the design and manufacture of pumping systems, Salmson was chosen to equip the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth and the Green Point stadium in Cape Town, which are hosting the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa.

To meet the drinking water needs of FIFA players, spectators and official delegations, Salmson designed a practically identical pumping system for both stadiums.

Three "Multi-V 1607" stainless steel vertical multistage pumps form the heart of the drinking water distribution system. Two pumps operate continuously, while the third automatically switches on if one of the two pumps malfunctions.

At Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Salmson pumps can deliver 32 liters of water per hour to a height of 500 meters. They are equipped with a 65 kW motor. A tank capable of holding 5.5 liters of water directly supplies the ground floor of the stadium, where the changing rooms, medical area, and VIP suites are located.

During a match of the British & Irish Lions rugby team, which brought together nearly 50 people (the stadium's maximum capacity), the pumping system demonstrated its full performance.

Salmson also equipped the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium with three standardized base-mounted pumps to supply the air conditioning system. They can deliver 250 liters of water per hour to a height of 000 meters.
