AI to ensure safety testing of high-visibility clothing
In partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany's leading research institute specializing in applied sciences), textile service provider Mewa has developed a new method based on artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the protection level of high-visibility clothing after each wash and care cycle. According to a study by the German Professional Association for Accident Insurance (DGUV) and the German Construction Industry Association (BG Bau), this testing process offers an unprecedented level of safety.
Proven reliability in a research project
The reliability of the patented, AI-based digital control was confirmed in a joint research project conducted by the DGUV and BG Bau in 2023. Scientific laboratory and field tests demonstrated that this process guarantees a high level of reliability. It detects far more accurately than the human eye when high-visibility clothing no longer meets the required standards. By integrating this patented digital system into its quality control, Mewa ensures even more efficient replacement or repair of worn clothing, including reflective tape, which is essential for all outdoor work.
Artificial intelligence, an ally of security
Thanks to the improved process, quality control of high-visibility clothing has reached a new level of safety. This digital process was developed and patented in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute. It is unique on the market and has been ranked among the best in the "optical technology" category of the German Industry Award.
Once washed and dried, the garments are hung on hangers and transported through a conveyor system to the testing facility. The software checks the luminance of the fluorescent fabric and the specific reflectance value of the reflective strips. If a garment fails to meet the pre-established standards, it is automatically rejected for further testing.
"The AI-based technology complements the usual visual inspection and provides our customers with greater security. By the end of 2025, this digital inspection will be rolled out across all Mewa sites," explains Stefan Abel, Head of Quality Production & Logistics at Mewa.
The results will be automatically recorded and can be made available to customers if needed, particularly during an audit.
Clothing inspection: an obligation for companies
Companies are responsible for ensuring the proper use and functioning of high-visibility clothing, in accordance with risk assessment requirements. These two points are clarified through the accident prevention guidelines of professional associations and the decree on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
If the care and maintenance of high-visibility clothing is entrusted to companies specializing in industrial washing, they must ensure that the personal protective equipment is always in optimal working order before handing it over to their customer. Textile service providers must also check that the reflective strips and fluorescent fabric retain their protective effect. This requirement applies to all areas where high-visibility clothing must be worn, such as road and railway construction, transport and traffic, emergency and law enforcement services, navigation, and agricultural activities.
