The EUREF Campus in Berlin-Schöneberg is a flagship European project for the energy transition. Administrative Building 14 stands out as the architectural highlight of the region. Its sustainability, from its foundations to its green roof, makes it a model of energy efficiency, thanks in particular to the JACKODUR® insulation system for inverted roofs.
The EUREF-Campus 14 administrative building is one of the new buildings on the site. The building's interior, as well as the materials used, were designed to ensure maximum efficiency. Thermoactive concrete for heating and cooling control, centrally controlled blinds on the triple glazing, and automated lighting ensure high comfort and a pleasant atmosphere. The building's insulation also makes a significant contribution to this performance. The roof structure is unique. The designers, architects, and roofing contractors opted for the inverted roof principle with JACKODUR® insulation panels from JACKON Insulation.
JACKODUR® perfectly insulates inverted roofs
An inverted roof is a non-ventilated flat roof. Unlike conventional constructions, the insulation is located above the waterproofing. This leaves the surface exposed to the elements, which may seem unusual at first glance, but is a major advantage. The insulation layer provides long-term protection for the waterproofing against mechanical damage, UV embrittlement, and extreme temperature changes. With its JACKODUR® insulation boards, JACKON Insulation offers the ideal product for use in inverted roofs. Made from extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) and featuring a closed-cell structure, they are resistant to moisture, pressure-resistant, and remain stable even under heavy loads.
The green roof enhances the building
The inverted roof structure consists of several layers. Two hundred and forty millimeters of JACKODUR® KF 300 Standard SF insulation was installed over the load-bearing structure and the waterproofing membrane. "JACKODUR® panels are easy to work with. Thanks to the weather resistance of XPS, we were able to work in virtually all weather conditions, even in winter. Over time, the insulation panel retains its effectiveness, even in heavy rain, freezing, or thawing. To stabilize the entire structure, we laid honeycomb panels on top of the insulation panels, filled with coarse gravel. The green roof was installed by Optigrün. The inverted roof is no longer just functional; it also contributes to the building's visual appeal," explains Ralf Logsch, project manager at SKD Bau, the roofing company.
