The SylSmart smart lighting management solution uses sensors to detect the presence of people in a room and automatically adjust the brightness of LED lights accordingly. This reduces energy consumption when rooms are not in use and ensures optimal lighting when they are. This solution was chosen by SAIPEM to comply with the requirements of the ELAN law regarding the reduction of energy consumption in commercial buildings.

Thanks to Sylvania solutions, the challenge of "reducing its energy consumption" has more than been met by the SAIPEM France head office!

With a surface area of 26.000 m², SAIPEM's headquarters in France accommodates its 2.000 employees in a six-story building (ground floor + 6 floors) divided into four zones (A, B, C, D). It consists of a ground floor housing the reception area and six identical floors containing office spaces, meeting rooms, and two break areas. Built in 2001, the building, with its large glass facades, originally featured indirect lighting provided by panels equipped with two 55W compact fluorescent tubes, continuously illuminated from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. This lighting system having become obsolete, the company decided at the end of 2021 to replace it in order to meet the energy consumption reduction targets set by the ELAN law.

On the recommendation of Bouygues Energies & Services, responsible for the building's construction and maintenance, David Halluin - Head of General Services at SAIPEM France - chose Sylvania's eco-efficient LED luminaires combined with the SylSmart Connected smart lighting management solution.

An initial objective of 75% energy savings in winter

To achieve the energy savings SAIPEM France desired, Sylvania began an energy audit of its current lighting systems, their costs, and the regulations to be complied with (ELAN law, ban on fluorescent tubes on September 1, 2023). This was followed by a lighting analysis conducted by Sylvania's research team, which recommended replacing existing equipment with more energy-efficient options that comply with regulations and are suited to the space's needs.

Sylvania therefore recommended replacing:

- the light panels in warm white (3000 K) by the eco-responsible OPTICLIP luminaire with replaceable LED modules, associated with the SylSmart Connected intelligent lighting management solution,

- 26W compact fluorescent spotlights located in traffic areas with the ASCENT 100 II decorative downlight.

To assess the effectiveness of the recommended lighting solution and ensure it met SAIPEM France's needs, eight OPTICLIP luminaires with dual detection (presence sensor and natural light input) were initially installed for six months in an office. With the results proving successful, the replacement of all luminaires in wings A and B on the 4th floor began in April 2022.

The 230 OPTICLIP luminaires are used in office spaces, comfort zones, and meeting rooms due to their high luminous efficacy and low glare index. They are set at 300 lux and are custom-made to fit in place of the old panels. They are also connected to a wireless lighting management system, which turns the lights on and off based on the presence of people and natural light. In addition, meeting rooms equipped with screens also have a wireless and battery-free dimmable switch, allowing occupants to adjust the lighting during projections for optimal comfort.

In the corridors, 105 round ASCENT 100 II downlights with aluminium heat sinks, also with a colour temperature of 4000 K, complete the installation. With a power of 17W, they combine visual comfort (CRI>80, SDCM<3) and high performance (luminous efficacy of 113 lm/W).

Throughout the project, Sylvania supported Bouygues Energies & Services in deploying the SylSmart Connected system by configuring lighting zones and scenes off-site, as well as setting up the luminaires. Using a dedicated mobile app, the Bouygues Energies & Services operations manager can also adjust certain settings at any time if necessary, such as calibrating natural light or monitoring its proper operation.

A real economy beyond expectations

Thanks to four meters dedicated to energy readings, the Bouygues Energies & Services operations manager can closely monitor consumption. Before the existing lighting was renovated, it was 4 kWh in October 5.092.

A year later, thanks to Sylvania's high-performance solutions, it increased to 410 kWh in October 2022, " which represents more than 80% energy savings smoothed over 1 year, well beyond our expectations thanks to the reaction of the double detection that we could not measure previously " explains the contact for SAIPEM.

The audit conducted by Sylvania was a lever, triggering the project, and proved to be relevant. Thanks to the energy savings, the savings are immediate (ROI estimate of approximately 4 years).
