A Humanitarian Commitment to Public Health

The Viega Foundation, created by the Viega group, a global leader in sanitation and drinking water, has launched an ambitious humanitarian initiative in India. This non-profit foundation aims to improve living conditions by providing clean water, basic sanitation, and promoting hygiene. These efforts are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

The WASH Challenge in India

In India, the challenge of access to safe drinking water is colossal. With a population exceeding 1,4 billion, nearly half of the population lacks access to safe drinking water. Furthermore, the lack of a centralized wastewater disposal system results in 90% of wastewater returning to the water cycle untreated. In response to this critical situation, the Viega Foundation has chosen to support three WASH projects in India, thereby contributing to improving public health and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Three WASH Projects

  1. The WASH Institute: This project uses trucks equipped with modern filtration technology to treat wastewater in a decentralized manner in villages across southern India. In collaboration with the Indian government and international research institutes, the WASH Institute aims to provide safe and sustainable drinking water.
  2. Impact Foundation and NFSSM Alliance: These organizations advise local and regional government departments in the northeastern states of India. They provide specific knowledge and experience for safe wastewater management in these mountainous regions.
  3. Yuva Unstoppable: This project focuses on improving learning conditions in schools in the state of Gujarat. It renovates sanitation facilities and uses mobile containers equipped with filters to reuse wastewater, particularly for toilet flushing.

Towards a Healthier Future

The Viega Foundation's commitment to India is a shining example of how businesses can help solve global humanitarian challenges. By providing access to clean water and safe sanitation, the foundation plays a crucial role in improving public health and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
