Summary for decision-makers

No manufacturer's carbon commitment is factored into the RE2020 calculation: only the Environmental and Health Declaration (FDES) of the installed product is considered , valid for five years and verified by an independent third party. The Velux Group's trajectory, aiming for a 100% reduction in scopes 1 and 2 by 2030 compared to 2020 (60% already achieved), describes its factories. However, over 98% of its footprint falls under scope 3, both at the supplier level and within the product itself.

A manufacturer publishing a carbon footprint report doesn't provide the same information as an environmental datasheet for its products. One describes its factories, the other contributes to regulatory calculations. The figures published by the Velux group illustrate the difference between these two reports and the commitments each represents.

What is the status of the group's live broadcasts?

The group's objective is a 100% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 , compared to the 2020 baseline year . The group reports that a 60% reduction has already been achieved in this area, based on the same 2020 figures.

Two factors explain the bulk of this decrease. The group reports 100% documented renewable electricity coverage since 2023. It also tracks energy intensity relative to revenue, which has decreased from 91 MWh per million euros in 2023 to 87 MWh per million euros in 2024, representing a 5% improvement in one year, with a target of a 56% reduction by 2030 based on 2015 levels.

These figures are those of a manufacturer, not a product. They describe manufacturing, site energy consumption, and internal logistics. They say nothing about the impact of a window installed in a roof, and that's precisely where the mass lies.

Scope 3 accounts for more than 98% of the footprint

The group itself states that indirect emissions from the value chain, scope 3 , represent more than 98% of its carbon footprint, a figure still published by the group in August 2026. In other words, factories account for less than two percent of the total, and the bulk of it occurs with suppliers of glass, aluminum, wood and components, and then in the life of the product.

The method used involves training suppliers, who are asked to declare their emissions to the group and set their own reduction targets. By the end of 2023, 33 suppliers had adopted targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. This approach is the same as that of other joinery manufacturers whose targets validated by the SBTi ( Science Based Targets Initiative ) commit the entire upstream supply chain.

What the 2020 commitment covers, and what it does not cover

In 2020 , the group announced , with the WWF, a Lifetime Carbon Neutral commitment : to capture by 2041 , the year of its centenary, the equivalent of the emissions accumulated since its creation in 1941 , through forestry projects.

The distinction is important to maintain because it is regularly overlooked in reports. Reducing emissions and capturing historical stock are two different operations, driven by different mechanisms and verified differently. The former is measured over a standardized area, while the latter depends on the continuity of forestry projects over several decades. A project manager who cites commitment in a calculation note is conflating the two.

What really matters in an RE2020 calculation

No company commitments are taken into account in the regulatory calculation. What is taken into account is the Environmental and Health Declaration Sheet (FDES), established according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards , along with its national supplement, and registered in the national INIES database. It contains the results of the product's life cycle analysis and feeds into the Ic construction indicator.

Three of its characteristics govern its use. Its validity is five years . Verification by an independent third party has been mandatory since July 1, 2017. And when no declaration exists for a product, the calculation falls back on default environmental data, the very principle of which is to be penalized. These constraints apply to all trades, from structural roofing work to joinery.

manufacturer's carbon footprint Environmental declaration form
What she describes the company's emissions, factories and value chain the impact of the installed product on its life cycle
Setting voluntary commitment, objectives validated by the Science Based Targets initiative ISO 14025 standard and EN 15804 standard with its national supplement
Verification through the initiative that validates the objectives by an independent third party, mandatory since 1er July 2017
Period of validity the target horizon, here 2030 five years
Included in the RE2020 calculation immense Yes, via the Ic construction indicator.

What the prescriber can request, and when

A useful request consists of three elements, and it is made at the time of consultation, not upon receipt. The exact reference of the installed product, since a product range may contain several declarations. The validity date of the corresponding Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), as an expired one is no longer usable. And the functional unit used, which determines the comparison between two products: comparing two EPDs based on different units yields no usable results.

The rest is a matter of design. A roof window has manufacturing and performance implications, the latter depending on its size, orientation, and solar protection. Issues of efficient natural lighting and attic conversion impact a building's energy consumption for fifty years, whereas the manufacturing impact is only paid for once.

A manufacturer's trajectory remains useful information, provided it is interpreted for what it is: an indicator of the direction taken by the upstream sector, and not a data point for calculation. Both are present, but not in the same section of the document, and all the content related to the Velux brand allows you to track both.

Frequently asked questions about a manufacturer's carbon footprint

What do scopes 1, 2 and 3 cover?

Scopes 1 and 2 cover a manufacturer's direct emissions and those from the energy they purchase. Scope 3 covers the entire value chain, from raw material purchases and transportation to the product's lifecycle. At Velux, it represents over 98% of the group's footprint.

What is the Velux Group's carbon target?

A 100% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, with 2020 as the reference year. The group reports that 60% has already been achieved, with 100% renewable electricity documented since 2023.

What is the difference between reducing emissions and offsetting them?

Reducing emissions affects future emissions and is measured within a standardized scope. Capturing or offsetting emissions affects existing emissions, through forestry projects whose sustainability is assessed over decades. The two are not interchangeable and are not verified in the same way.

What is an FDES and what is its purpose?

This is the environmental and health declaration sheet for a construction product, established according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards with their national supplement. Registered in the INIES database, it contains the life cycle analysis and feeds into the Ic construction indicator of the RE2020 regulation.

How long does an FDES remain valid?

Five years. Its verification by a recognized independent third party has been mandatory since July 1, 2017. An expired form can no longer be used in a calculation, and the absence of a declaration leads to the use of default environmental data, which is penalizing.

Does a company's carbon commitment count towards the RE2020 calculation?

No. Regulatory calculations only consider the environmental data of the installed product. A group's commitment provides information on the direction taken by the upstream sector, but it has no value in a calculation note and does not replace an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

Glossary of carbon data in buildings

scope 3

Total indirect emissions of a company, excluding purchased energy: raw materials, transport, subcontracting, use and end-of-life of products sold. This is the dominant category for most building industry manufacturers.

FDES

Environmental and health declaration sheet for a construction product. It presents the results of the life cycle analysis according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards, and is filed in the national INIES database.

INIES database

National reference database of environmental and health data for construction products and equipment. It is the source of the values used for the regulatory calculation of a building's carbon impact.

Ic construction

The RE2020 indicator measures the carbon impact of building components and the construction site over the entire life cycle of the building. It is calculated using environmental data from the products used.

Functional unit

A quantified reference against which the results of a life cycle analysis are compared, for example, one square meter of product installed over a given lifespan. Two datasheets with different units are not comparable.

Science-based targets

An international initiative that validates companies' emissions reduction targets against benchmark climate trajectories. The validation focuses on the methodology and scope, not the results achieved.
