FIRE-RESISTANT CURTAIN WALLS ON THE PATIO OF “39 COLISÉE”

Summary for decision-makers

Located in the heart of Paris's Golden Triangle, the "39 Colisée," an Art Deco building constructed in 1920 by architect Charles Bonnal, is undergoing a complete renovation and expansion. The building, which houses 6 m² of office space on eight levels, is organized around an interior patio.

The project was entrusted to AXA REIM, supported by YM Architecture and Yreix Martineau as project manager, and the general contractor Bouygues Construction. MAF Atlantique, designer and manufacturer of fire-resistant glazed joinery, partnered with Enveloppe Façade Serrurerie (EFS), a specialist in covered enclosures and expert in managing complex logistics and installations, to respond to the call for tenders.

The collaboration between MAF Atlantique and EFS enabled them to work together on the distribution of the supply and installation of the fire curtain wall. The project includes 500 m² of custom-made, fire-resistant glass surfaces manufactured by MAF Atlantique, with logistics and installation handled by EFS in a five-story patio. The complexity of the project lies in its accessibility and a cramped work area.

The two companies collaborated on execution plans and a specific methodology for transport and installation logistics. Bouygues Construction selected MAF Atlantique and EFS to manage the project. The first glazing units were delivered and installed in November 2022, and site completion is scheduled for July 13.

MAF Atlantique carried out the study phase, design, manufacturing and machining of the structures, as well as the site assessment in light of the technical specificities of the project. EFS handled coordination, delivery logistics and installation using a site-specific methodology.

A prototype was created in April 2022 to anticipate unforeseen events. The curtain wall is composed of EW30 glazing mounted on a steel frame, with 130 panes installed on the exterior walls around the patio on five levels. The panes are fire-resistant and benefit from acoustic, solar, and thermal performance.

The complex "39 Colisée" construction site required tailored logistics due to its difficult access and the confined work area. A relocated intermediate warehouse was set up, and delivery to the site was carried out using palletization.

The "39 Colisée" project demonstrates MAF Atlantique and EFS's expertise in large-scale and specific projects. The consortium's service cost was €800 excluding tax, and curtain wall projects represent approximately 000% of MAF Atlantique's business.

MAF Atlantique, based in Guérande for 18 years, specializes in the manufacture of fire-resistant glass joinery in steel, wood, and aluminum. The company is headed by Guillaume Leborgne and has an integrated design office that designs unique plans and solutions for each project. Using high-performance industrial tools, MAF Atlantique produces high-quality structures intended to protect people and property, particularly for establishments open to the public (ERP).

Since 2015, MAF Atlantique has been a subsidiary of the ACIEO Group, which has 400 employees, 7 companies, and a turnover of €90 million. The company thus benefits from the strength of an industrial group while retaining the flexibility of an SME.

As for EFS, the company is headed by Cédric Slowensky and stands out for its expertise in the field of covered structures and the management of complex logistics and installations. It has collaborated with MAF Atlantique for many years and is delighted to support its partner on this call for tenders for the "39 Colisée". Together, the two companies were able to meet the technical and logistical challenges of the project thanks to their complementary skills and adapted methodology.

The "39 Colisée" project is a successful example of the renovation and extension of a historic building, where the combined expertise of MAF Atlantique and EFS helped overcome the challenges of a complex project. Their collaboration ensured the satisfaction of Bouygues Construction and the project manager, while respecting the technical and aesthetic requirements of the project. Their expertise and experience in the construction of exceptional curtain walls, combined with carefully planned and executed logistics, contributed to the success of this iconic project located in the heart of Paris.

In the heart of Paris's Golden Triangle, the Art Deco building “39 Colisée” (Paris 8) is undergoing a complete renovation and expansion. Built in 1920 by architect Charles Bonnal, the building houses 6 m² of office space on 193 levels, all centered around an interior patio.

Additional expertise for an exceptional curtain wall in the heart of Paris

This project is being entrusted to the developer AXA REIM, supported by the firm YM Architecture and Yreix Martineau as project manager. The general contractor overseeing the entire project is Bouygues Construction.

For this project, MAF Atlantique immediately chose to partner with the company Enveloppe Façade Serrurerie (EFS). Indeed, the collaboration of a designer and manufacturer of fire-resistant glazed joinery (MAF Atlantique) and a specialist in covered enclosures (EFS), an expert in managing complex logistics and installations, was necessary to respond to the call for tenders.

A complementarity of expertise at the service of the “39 Colisée”

When MAF Atlantique discovers the specifications of the site, it immediately turns to its partner, EFS, to respond to them jointly. Together, they work on the response of the lot: distribution of the supply and installation for the firewall curtain wall.

The key: 500 m² of custom-made, fire-resistant glass surfaces manufactured by MAF Atlantique, with logistics and installation handled by EFS, in a five-story patio. The complexity of the project lies in its accessibility and a confined work area.

To put the odds on their side, the two companies are working together on the execution plans via their respective design offices, but also on a methodology specific to this site for transport and installation logistics.
Indeed, the key lay in the packaging of the deliverables on site.

Bouygues Construction, confirmed in its choice and reassured by the complementarity of the two entities, therefore selected them to take charge of the lot. The first glazing was delivered and installed on site in November 2022, with acceptance scheduled for July 13.

According to Guillaume Leborgne, director of MAF Atlantique ,

"A vital collaboration with EFS on this "39 Colisée" project, where our complementary expertise allows us to work on non-standard curtain walls such as this one. We are committed to always going the extra mile in advising our clients. Through our design office, we offer solutions adapted to each specific project."

An extraordinary curtain wall on 5 levels

MAF Atlantique's service was structured around the study phase, the design, manufacturing and machining of all the works within its Guérande workshops as well as the site opinion in view of the technical specificities of the site.

EFS then took charge of coordination, delivery logistics and installation using a methodology specific to this project.

Once the tender was won, MAF Atlantique designed and manufactured a prototype (April 2022), to anticipate any unforeseen events. This prototype, composed of a 2,75 m long x 3,11 m high frame with a RAL 9007 metallic finish, demonstrated MAF Atlantique's expertise in supporting its customers and its desire to offer, through its design office, a suitable solution for managing curtain wall type construction sites like this one.

The entire curtain wall is held in place by aluminum clamping hoods and is made up of EW30 glazing mounted on a steel frame for walls up to 1700 x 2915 mm. The steel was selected for its mechanical strength and fire resistance (see technical diagram or section plan). All 130 windows are installed on the exterior walls all around the patio rising on 5 levels. They are all fire-resistant with guardrails and benefit from acoustic, solar and thermal performances.

Reminder of the intervention:

  • 6 months
  • 500 m2 glass surfaces
  • A steel curtain wall with aluminum clamping hoods
  • 130 panes up to 1700 x 2915 mm
  • EW30 glazing with acoustic, solar, thermal and railing performances
  • Windows installed on the 5 levels of the curtain wall

" After many years of collaboration, we were delighted to support MAF Atlantique on this tender. Our respective expertise and the methodology adapted to the specific characteristics of this curtain wall allowed us to complete this project efficiently despite its accessibility constraints. "

Declares Cédric Slowensky, President and CEO of EFS

" MAF Atlantique's support during the design phase, through their engineering department and the prototype manufacturing, met our expectations. We also appreciated the relevance of their discussions with EFS regarding the specific logistics implemented for this difficult-to-access construction site. "

Declares Benjamin Heraud, head of covered enclosures - CEA of Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France

A complex project due to its difficult access

As the site is located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, it is difficult to access it. In addition, the work area for installing the various panes is very cramped due to the configuration of the interior patio.

To simplify supply logistics, a remote intermediate warehouse was set up. Delivery to the construction site was handled using a palletizing principle. This means that the various structures are delivered level by level, depending on the progress of the work. Planning ahead and considering a methodology specific to this project were essential to avoid inherent hazards.

Through the “39 Colisée” project, MAF Atlantique demonstrates its expertise in large-scale and specific projects, such as this impressive curtain wall. The MAF Atlantique and EFS consortium's service costs €800 excluding VAT. It should be noted that curtain wall projects represent approximately 000% of MAF Atlantique's business.
