AirvaultGOCO2: An innovative project for capturing and utilizing CO2 in the cement industry of Western France

As a reminder, AirvaultGOCO2 is a carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project being implemented for the Heidelberg Materials cement plant in Airvault, Deux-Sèvres. The objective of AirvaultGOCO2 is to capture nearly 1 million tons of CO2 per year.

AirvaultGOCO2 is part of the GOCO2 initiative launched in July 2023 to decarbonize industry in western France. The CO2 emissions captured at Airvault would be transported via pipeline to Saint-Nazaire, then by ship to dedicated storage wells. The AirvaultGOCO2 project would be carried out in partnership with Air Liquide for the CO2 capture unit and the supply of oxygen necessary to support the operation of the oxy-combustion furnace. GOCO2 is currently in the preliminary consultation phase under the auspices of the National Commission for Public Debate. 

AirvaultGOCO2 would complement the ongoing modernization of the cement plant (Airvault 2025), which aims in particular to increase the rate of alternative fuels to fossil fuels to nearly 90% and, in doing so, to reduce CO2 emissions from the site by 30%.
