Renovation of the Cuzieu (42) village hall: a hail-resistant roof for a preserved and sustainable heritage

The village hall is a symbolic building for the town of Cuzieu. This 700 m² building embodies the rural architecture of the Loire Valley, recognizable by its simple volumes and traditional tile roof. Aware of its heritage value, the Cuzieu town hall and the company in charge of the renovations ensured the building's authenticity was preserved while adapting it to current climatic requirements. The choice of Erlus terracotta tiles, resistant to hail, has provided lasting protection for the building while respecting its original architecture.

Tradition and innovation in the service of heritage

The project, completed in March 2023, consisted of removing the old roof, checking the framework, reinforcing certain elements and laying approximately 590 m² of terracotta tiles.
The roofing company combined traditional techniques with more modern solutions (HPV underlayment, reinforced fixings, etc.) to ensure optimal protection of the building without altering its appearance.

The Erlus E 58 SL tile: a response to climate challenges

In recent years, the Loire region has experienced several hailstorms, some of which have been extremely destructive to older roofs. To ensure the building's longevity, the choice fell on terracotta tiles, tested and certified for their resistance to mechanical impact. The old 570 m² roof had leaks that threatened the building's structural integrity. During this renovation, the roofing company opted for the E 58 SL terracotta tile in aged red from the manufacturer Erlus. Its hail resistance was the decisive factor in the choice of materials.

"The challenge was to propose a roof capable of withstanding climatic hazards while respecting the local architectural style," explains Robert Charvet, roofer for the company Loire Toiture. Erlus terracotta tiles offer this dual guarantee: strength and authenticity. All our projects in the region have allowed us to confirm the reliability of the E 58 SL tile.

The choice of sarking for better energy efficiency

The company also implemented wood fiber insulation using the technique of sarking. This exterior thermal insulation is particularly recommended for traditional pitched roofs. This technique involves installing continuous insulation directly onto the rafters or roof boards. Ideal for both new construction and renovation, it guarantees optimal thermal performance by eliminating thermal bridges, which are responsible for 30% of heat loss. Wood fiber, an ecological and sustainable material, further enhances the building's comfort and energy efficiency.

High-performance tiles

Made from carefully selected natural clays and fired at over 1000°C, E 58 SL tiles are distinguished by their high density and low porosity. This unique firing process gives them exceptional strength and optimal watertightness: essential characteristics for even the most demanding climatic conditions. E 58 SL tiles comply with European standards EN 1304 and EN 15601. Their dimensional stability and longevity also make them a durable solution for new construction or the renovation of heritage buildings.

Certified hail resistance

To guarantee the reliability of its products, Erlus subjected its entire range to rigorous testing by the IBS Linz Institute. These tests simulate the impact of hailstones on the tiles. The manufacturer consistently achieved at least class RG4, providing guaranteed protection against hailstones up to 40 mm in diameter. This certification confirms the exceptional resistance of its tiles and demonstrates Erlus' commitment to providing durable and reliable roofing solutions, even in extreme weather conditions.

The E 58 SL tile: universal and economical

The E 58 SL tile combines the advantages of the E 58 series of flat tiles in a versatile and economical version, ideal for low-pitched roofs (from 10°). Robust and break-resistant, it features a variable gauge of 3 mm and a wide interlocking system, ensuring quick and easy installation. With a convenient size (11,5 tiles/m²) and an adjustable gauge from 32,5 to 35,5 cm, it easily replaces existing tiles without altering the battens or the roof width. Available in ten colors, it offers an elegant finish despite its large size.
